Muskies fire season low 579 to capture 2nd at Muskingum Fall Invitational
NEW CONCORD, OHIO, October 6, 2008 - The Muskingum College men’s golf team fired a season low 579 (291-288) to finish in 2nd place at the Muskingum College Fall Invitational held at Eagle Sticks Golf Course in Zanesville, Ohio. Muskingum finished just three shots off the pace with their season low round. [Final Round Results]
Sophomore J.J. Mickey claimed 2nd place in the tournament after posting a score of 142 (70-72). Junior Josh Colyer fired a 146 (72-74) to finish the event in 8th overall. Right behind Colyer was sophomore Travis Roberts, who finish 9th after a two-day total of 147 (74-73) in his varsity debut. The 148 (75-73) of freshman Clinton Myers continued the Muskingum scoring as he finished 10th in the field. Freshman Jourdon Leymon finished 16th overall after firing a total of 149 (79-70).
“It is an exciting time for our program,” said Muskingum Head Coach Dave Kirby. “It has been awhile since we have strung together rounds like this, and as a coach, I felt like we are getting very close to the quality of play that we experienced with the 2002-03 team.”
Muskingum had a number of individuals competing in the field for the event. Freshman Joel Ardner finished 10th with a 148 (74-74). Senior Aaron Neff (77-74) and freshman Joey Shroyer (76-75) followed closely with a 151s at the event, finishing in a tie for 18th. Freshmen Josh Hollar (77-81) and Nick Kull (77-81) tied for 27th after posting 158s. A trio of sophomores would come next for the Muskies, with Joey Garret (t-31st) shooting 160 (79-81), Corey Papcun (33rd) posting a 161 (82-79), and David Snider (34th) with a 162 (82-80) at the tournament. Junior Ryan Sopko totaled 165 (87-78) to finish 38th in the field. Three freshmen would round out the day for Muskingum as Ethan McNaughten (43rd) shot 183 (93-90), Brock Hutchinson (44th) shot 195(93-102) and Jonathan Hanson (45th) shot 212 (111-101).
“We have a lot of depth on this team,” explain Kirby. “And we will use that to give us more push and momentum going into the off-season.”
Denison University claimed the team title by three strokes over Muskingum with 576 (291-285). Mount Union’s Lucas Murray took medalist honors with a 139 (68-71).
“It always stings to lose, but when you look at how we played, we did everything we could and we have clearly put ourselves in a position to win a conference championship,” said Kirby of the tournament.
The fall season for Muskingum ends with the conclusion of the tournament with the team and coach looking forward to what appears to be a very bright spring.
“When you look at the fall as a whole, we wanted to change the culture of our team with the commitment and practice,” said Kirby in some final words of the season. “We increased the demand on the players, and asked them to change the way they approach golf with the morning conditioning and increased range time. The team responded by becoming a group that genuinely care about each other. One would expect that in a team full of seniors, but with only one senior and three juniors, it speaks volumes about the team we have that so many young guys can come together like that.”
