John Glenn
REMEMBERING JOHN GLENN

Throughout the past week, our campus community and the Village of New Concord have joined with the world in remembering Senator John Glenn.  Along with our deep respect for the Senator and Mrs. Glenn's lifelong commitment to public service, we hold close the memories created through their strong bond with Muskingum as alumni, University Trustees and friends to Muskies near and far.

A Call to Service

On December 8, just a few short hours before we received word of Senator Glenn's passing, we held "A Call to Service: A Remembrance" commemorating the 75th anniversary of December 7, 1941 - Pearl Harbor Day and a pivotal day in the lives of John and Annie Glenn.  During the service in Brown Chapel, our community came together to reflect on that moment of profound change, to honor the Muskingum students and alumni who perished during World War II, and to celebrate Senator and Mrs. Glenn's commitment to service.  Visit our special coverage page to learn more about the service, read Reverend Mullins' homily, view photos, and watch Orbit Media's complete video coverage

John Glenn Gym
On Saturday, December 17, our Muskingum University Chamber Singers will perform in the senator's honor at the memorial, "John Glenn: Celebrating A Life of Service," to be held on the Ohio State University campus.  The Celebration of Life will be livestreamed here and further details can be found on the memorial page of OSU's John Glenn College of Public Affairs.  Here on our campus, our John Glenn Gymnasium has been lit each evening in tribute to him. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the Glenn family in the coming days as he is laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.

CONGRATULATIONS, DECEMBER GRADUATES

On December 10, a special recognition ceremony was held on campus to honor those Muskies who completed their degree in December 2016.  Welcoming them to the Long Magenta Line was a proud moment for us all, as we recalled together the many ways they have experienced and furthered the Muskingum traditions of excellence, engagement and service during their time here.  Congratulations to each of the graduates and to their families - we're excited to see how our new Muskingum alumni will continue to engage, explore and transform the world.

STUDENT BROADCASTERS RECOGNIZED

Congratulations to our student broadcasters for bringing home a first-place recognition from the College Broadcasters Inc. National Student Production Awards.  WMCO placed first in the category of Best Public Service Announcements for 2016 for PSA - I Am produced by Lindsay Grafe '16 to highlight the danger of driving under the influence. Associate Professor of Communication Dr. Lisa Marshall '03  serves as WMCO radio station manager.

New Concord Parade
CELEBRATING THE HOLIDAY SEASON

As our campus community wrapped up their fall semester and prepared to head home for the holidays, we celebrated the Christmas season together with several wonderful concerts and events.

The annual New Concord Christmas Parade helped get everyone in the holiday spirit.  The student leaders and Ken and I enjoyed our ride in a horse drawn carriage!

A Children's Gallery concert
At this time of year Brown Chapel is filled with the sounds of the season.  On November 20 I had the great privilege to narrate Peter and the Wolf and Aesop's Fables for the Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds concert "A Children's Gallery."  The December 3 annual "Home for the Holidays" concert featured our Wind Ensemble, Concert Choir and Choral Society.  In addition we enjoyed hosting the Southeastern Ohio Symphony Orchestra (SEOSO) "Seasonal Favorites" concert on December 4.

  Tree lighting
On December 7, we celebrated charity, love and light with a tree-lighting ceremony on the Quad, complete with hot chocolate, candle-lighting and carol-singing.  How beautiful to see the campus sparkle in this new Muskie tradition, which was organized by our Student Senate and Chaplain's Office!

Vespers
Our lovely annual Advent-Christmas Vespers at College Drive Presbyterian Church on December 10 featured the Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Muskingum Valley Brass, and New Concord UMC Handbell and Children's Choirs.  With a focus on bringing light in the darkness, the service was a very moving reminder of the solemnity, beauty and hope of the season.

  Finals Breakfast
Finally, on December 12, Muskingum faculty and staff joined together to provide our students with a well-deserved break from finals, serving them the traditional Late Night Breakfast in Patton Hall.  Our semester ends on December 16 as we send our students off with our best wishes for safe travels home for the holidays.

A SEASON OF GIVING

Throughout December, our students have engaged in multiple service projects to make Christmas brighter for others, including our 27th annual "Christmas on Campus" which provided gifts for local children in need; our 15th annual Women's Basketball Team Love Fund project which provided Christmas gifts and holiday meals to local children; the Student Athlete Advisory Committee's Hoops for Hunger Food Drive in which they collected non-perishables and monetary donations for the Food Bank of the College Drive Presbyterian Church; and Students Supporting Armed Forces who gathered items for "Operation Gratitude" Christmas Boxes to be sent to American troops stationed overseas.
