Speech team earns honors in back-to-back tournaments and qualifies ten for national competition

The Muskingum University speech team earned second place team sweepstakes honors in two consecutive speech tournaments and has qualified ten team members for national competition. The honors came at the Falcon Classic Birds of a Feather Swing Tournament, held at Bowling Green State University, and the Whopper Xtravaganza Tournament, held on Muskingum’s campus.

At the Falcon tournament, Muskingum earned second place team honors in the Limited Entry division. 

Erica Canter '15 placed fifth in After Dinner Speaking (ADS) with her original humorous speech titled Can’t Turn it Off:  The Risks of Comedy, earning a total of 10 team sweepstakes points in her combined events of ADS and Poetry.

Jamie Graves '15, competing as a novice in Poetry, Dramatic Interpretation, Impromptu Speaking and Programmed Oral Interpretation, placed fourth in Poetry and sixth in Dramatic Interpretation, earning a total of 9 team sweepstakes points.

Jaliah Oglesby '18 competed as a novice in four events:  Prose Interpretation, Programmed Oral Interpretation, Impromptu Speaking and Informative Speaking, winning sixth place in Novice Impromptu and fifth place in Novice Informative with her original speech titled Girl’s Got Hair:  A Socio-economic History of Hair Extensions in the U.S.  She earned 13 team sweepstakes points, and was named Muskingum’s Most Valuable Speaker for that tournament.

At the Whopper tournament, the following students qualified for the Public Communication Speech and Debate League national tournament and gave the team 54 sweepstakes points:

Carter Brown '16 placed second in the category of Whoppers and sixth in Improvisational Duo.
Darrell Briggs '18 placed fourth in the category of Current Events.
Canter placed second in Stand Up Comedy and sixth in Improvisational Duo.
Graves, earned fifth place in Poetry Slam and seventh place in Improvisational Duo.
Marty Kurtz '17 placed fourth in Poetry Slam.
Oglesby earned third place in TED Talks and fifth place in Story Slam.
Aaron Perkins '15 earned third place in Stand Up Comedy, fourth place in Audition Monologues and sixth place in Poetry Slam.
Cody Pettit '15 earned second place in Editorial Impromptu and seventh place in Improvisational Duo.
Kaylee Piatt '18 won third place in Audition Monologue.
Kayla Rausch '16 earned fourth place in Radio Broadcasting.
Jason Schaumleffel '18 earned second place in Current Events and TED Talks.
Rachel Schlarb '18 won fourth place in TED Talks and fifth place in Whoppers.
Stephen Fondriest '15 and Matt Allen '15 won fourth place in Improvisational Duo.
