Graduate and Continuing Studies offers TESOL endorsement

Muskingum College has added the TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) endorsement to its Graduate and Continuing Studies program to train educators in both the private and public sectors to work with children and adult learners who do not speak English as their first language.

The TESOL endorsement is designed to provide teachers and trainers the knowledge and skills needed to effectively teach English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) by equipping them to meet the large and growing need in America and around the world for instructors of the English language.

According to Dr. Joy Cowdrey, chair of the Education Department at Muskingum College, “The number of students for whom English is their second language is steadily growing in all southeastern Ohio school districts, yet because of the small numbers in each individual school, many of our schools lack credentialed ESL teachers.” She noted that currently the job of educating these students mainly falls to the regular classroom teachers who have little experience or background in teaching content to students who do not speak English as their first language.

TESOL teachers do not need to have knowledge of any foreign language and are able to work in a variety of settings, including school classrooms and adult literacy programs, as well as in training programs designed for professionals working in a global market.
