Graduate commencement features address by Dr. Carl E. Van Horn

Muskingum College held its 13th graduate commencement service on Saturday, May 14 at 10:00 a.m. in the Recreation Center on the campus. Both master of arts in education and master of arts in teaching degrees were conferred.

Dr. Carl E. Van HornThe commencement address, titled Teachers and the 21st Century Economy, was presented by Dr. Carl E. Van Horn, the founding director of the Heldrich Center for Workforce Development and professor of public policy in the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Recognized internationally for his expertise on workforce, human resources and employment issues, Dr. Van Horn has extensive experience in both the public and private sectors. He chairs the Rutgers University Workforce Development Coordinating Council, a coordinating group for all major training and research units that are concerned with the preparation and improvement of the workforce.

Dr. Van Horn has authored numerous books, including No One Left Behind: Economic Change and the American Worker and A Nation at Work: The Heldrich Guide to the American Workforce. He also has authored scores of articles on political science, management and labor relations, urban planning, and education.

In 1996, President Bill Clinton appointed Dr. Van Horn to the Presidential Emergency Board to mediate labor/management disputes in the rail industry. His contributions there resulted in his appointment by the U.S. House of Representatives to the Transportation Advisory Committee. He also has served as senior economist for the Joint Economic Committee of the United States Congress, and as a consultant to the U.S. Departments of Labor and Education, the National Commission for Employment Policy and the National Science Foundation, among others.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Dr. Van Horn graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Pittsburgh and received his master of arts and doctor of philosophy degrees in political science and public policy from The Ohio State University.

Muskingum College President Anne C. Steele welcomed those assembled and said, "You have worked toward your goal and committed yourself to seeking advanced knowledge. Through you, lives will be changed and communities will be strengthened."

In his address, Dr. Van Horn told the graduates, “A teacher lights the way for the next generation, and I am confident that your studies here have convinced you of the critical role you play.”

In recognition of his achievements, the college conferred upon Dr. Van Horn an honorary doctor of public service degree, which was presented by President Steele and Muskingum College alumnus and trustee Gordon E. Spillman.
