Intramural Wallyball Rules
General Play:
Each team is 3 person co-ed. You may play with 2 males and 1 female or 2 females and 1 male.
A coin toss will be conducted before the match. The winner of the toss can choose serve or side of court. If three games are played, the server in the first game also serves the third game.
Each court will be administered by a referee (who will also serve as scorekeeper) located in the viewing gallery above each court.
Time-outs:
Each team is allowed one time out per game.
Scoring:
A standard wallyball game goes to 21 points (we may adjust the # of points based on how many teams enter - this will be announced the first night of tournament). A match consists of 2 out of 3 games.
Scoring is rally scoring (every serve is a point). The winning team must win by 2 points.
In general, regular volleyball rules are played with some wallyball clarifications listed below:
- The ball is out of bounds when it hits the ceiling or the back wall when it is coming from the opponent’s side. It is out of bounds when it hits 2 walls consecutively on a serve, spike, or block.
- The back wall is only in play on the side of the team that is returning a serve or spike, provided that a member from that team has hit the ball first. ( In other words, you can ricochet a ball off of your own back wall to either return it or keep it on play if you have a hit left)
- The ceiling is in play on the side of the team that is returning a serve or spike, provided that a member from that team has hit the ball first.
- The ball can hit the wall on either side of the net on a serve. However, it can only hit one time before it lands on the other side of the net. Examples of recommended serving patterns are attached. The server must stay behind the serving line until the ball is contacted. You must maintain your serving order throughout the game, but you cant stand in any position or play any position before and after the serve.
- The ball is dead when:
The ball hits the floor
The ball hits 2 or more walls consecutively on the receiving side.
The ball hits the ceiling on the opponent’s side.
The ball hits the back wall on the fly on the receiving team’s side.
A served ball hits the net.
A player dinks the ball with an open hand. You may only use a closed fist.
- Climbing the wall to block a set or serve is illegal.
- If a player comes in contact with the ball and the ball deflects off the back wall on the same side of the court and goes over the net, the ball is good as long as it does not hit another wall.
