Karlstad University (Karlstad, Sweden)

Requirements: Students must have at least full-time, sophomore status and a minimum 2.5 GPA to participate. A proficiency in Swedish is not required.

Financial Responsibilities: While studying at Karlstad University, students will continue to pay all tuition fees directly to their home institution. Students are required to pay room charges to Karlstad. They must provide for their transportation to and from the university, as well as class materials and any personal expenses. Each students must purchase health insurance coverage as defined and required by the host institution.

Room: Many of the accommodations offered are singles with a bathroom included and kitchen space to share; others have communal bathrooms. Most of the residences provide TV rooms and laundry rooms; some have table-tennis rooms or saunas. International students also could like in a big, three-person apartment with laundry facilities nearby. The farthest residence is 8 km away from the university, near the city center, whereas some are very close to the university. Karlstad's bus transportation system enables students to go to and from the university.

Board: All students must pay for their meals directly from the cafeteria or make their own using the kitchen facilities in the residences.

Classes: A wide range of courses are offered in English at Karlstad University, including business studies, psychology, several types of sciences, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. The university offers courses in English, French, German, and Spanish literature in their respective languages as well. Courses on the Swedish language at the appropriate level are offered also. Grades awarded in Swedish universities are essentially pass or fail.

About Karlstad: The city of Karlstad is known as the city of sunshine for its friendliness and its good climate for commerce. The city offers many activities such as theater, cinemas, and many art galleries and museums, as well as restaurants and bars. About 80,000 people live in Karlstad. The province of Värmland, where Karlstad is located, is known for its beautiful lakes and forests, and students can take advantage of the countryside by camping, skiing, fishing, or mountain climbing. Some of Värmland's major businesses include timber, iron, and paper. Some foods included in Swedish cuisine are side meats with cheese and bread, cereal for breakfast, elk meat, and many types of seafood from the nearby lakes and seas. Karlstad University has about 10,000 students, with about 230 international students each year.
