International Orientation

There are two different International Orientations. For new students coming for the Fall Semester, they should attend the August Orientation. For new students coming in the Spring Semester, they should attend the January Orientation.

For new students, it is strongly encouraged that you attend orientation, look through the Incoming Student Page and the International Student Handbook, and ask any questions that you have!

Schedule may change! Check your welcome folder that you receive with your residence keys for the most updated schedule.

2011 International Student Orientation Schedule

New International Student Orientation will be from August 20th-August 26th and there is a $100 fee for this program. Four-year degree seeking students (those on an F-1 student visa) are required to attend and pay the fee. Exchange students (those on a J-1 student visa) can choose to attend and pay the fee or choose to arrive on August 27th. They are strongly encouraged to attend orientation.

All students participating in the New International Student Orientation should arrive at the Port Columbus International Airport (code CMH) on either August 18th or August 19th and email Valerie (vsmith@muskingum.edu) to tell her of the arrival information so a Muskingum University van can meet you at the airport.

Here is a general schedule for Orientation 2011. Students will receive a detailed schedule once they arrive on campus and receive their keys to their rooms.

Saturday, August 20th

Morning- go to Zanesville to purchase items needed for rooms and school supplies. This is a perfect time to get bedding, towels, lights, clocks, hangers, etc.

Afternoon- go to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for a Major League Professional Baseball Game. The Pittsburgh Pirates will play the Cincinnati Reds, these two teams are closest geographically to Muskingum. We will take two buses to Pittsburgh and will travel with a group of American student leaders from Muskingum University. There will be fireworks after the game.

Sunday, August 21st

We will travel by bus to Columbus to visit the zoo in the morning and to go to an electronic store in the afternoon. Many students will bring laptops from home, but this will be a chance to purchase anything else that you need, including sim cards for your cell phones or a prepaid cell phone.

Monday, August 22nd

Teaching Assistants will be in training with World Languages all day. All other students will receive a campus tour, get campus IDs, pay their bills, set up their email accounts, etc. There will be a fun activity in the afternoon.

Tuesday, August 23rd

Teaching Assistants will be in training with World Languages all day. F-1 students (degree-seeking students) will be with Meri Linn all day for ESL testing. J-1 exchange students will do some fun activities and have some time to adjust any classes and to make sure their computers are working properly.

Wednesday, August 24th- Friday, August 26th

There will be a variety of information sessions during these three days covering topics such as immigration rules, classroom behavior, academic standards, health insurance, banking accounts, employment, use of technology, living in the residence halls, etc. There will also be some fun activities such as bowling or scavenger hunts.

Friday, August 26th-Sunday, August 28th

Beginning Friday afternoon, there will be a second orientation program for all new Muskingum students. These days are almost all enjoyable games and activities that encourage you to get to know other (American!) students. There are also some important meetings during these days for F-1, degree-seeking, students to meet with the teacher in their First Year Seminar class.
