Muskingum's Commitment to Accessible, Affordable Education

It is not easy for students and their families to afford the cost of a college education, particularly at private liberal arts institutions. Without financial assistance many students would be unable to attend the college of their choice, and some may not be able to afford college at all. At Muskingum, over 80% of our students are given the opportunity to pursue their career and life goals because financial aid has made it possible to afford our costs. We are committed to access and will do our best, whenever possible, to provide students who desire to attend the opportunity to do so.

Muskingum’s commitment to financial access combines a comprehensive program of grants and scholarships, loans, and work opportunities with one of the lowest tuition rates of private colleges in Ohio. In 1996 Muskingum reduced its tuition by $4,000 (a 29% reduction), and has held annual increases to five percent or less since then. This decision, a move which stirred national interest and has been adopted by several colleges in recent years, has contributed to great enrollment success and has allowed us to further invest in the educational program for our students. Our hope is that Muskingum’s combination of reasonable costs and continued efforts to provide financial aid to students who need it will help students and families better understand how a high quality, private education can be affordable.

We make no promises other than we assist students who show financial need, and we assist them at a consistent level for the duration of their stay at Muskingum. We try to reduce the cost gap between Muskingum and public institutions; we try to make Muskingum affordable. We succeed frequently.
