The Chat-Back Group
Chat-Back is a group composed of students with LD for the sole purpose of gaining a better understanding of their disability, and to inform the Muskingum community of LD's. Chat-Back provides an avenue of fellowship among the PLUS students through service to the college and community.
All PLUS students are invited and encouraged to participate in the group and since the initial meeting in 1995, the PLUS programs Chat-Back group holds an active membership of 10 - 20 individuals. This number is slightly higher than the average of 10 - 15 individuals participating at other educational institutions.
Activities Of The Chat-Back Group
- Act as tour guides for prospective PLUS students
- Telephone ambassadors to all perspective students regarding the program and Muskingum College.
- Host Overnight stays for prospective students
- Attend College Nights
- Assist with Freshman Fridays and Discover Muskingum
- Assist with Muskie Previews (Summer orientation program)
- Assist with the First Step Program as student mentors
- Host professional speakers focusing on LD and transitions to workforce environment
- Host a variety of social activities such as ice cream socials.
- Contribute to the PLUS publication of Centerline
Looking to the Future of Chat-Back
- Nominate 2 to 4 students to meet monthly with coordinator to discuss the focus for each month
- Talking with LD students (grades 1-12) regarding their future in college
- Host an open forum for local LD students and their parents here at Muskingum
- Focus a discussion on the legal aspects of accommodations at the college level
- Assist in the education of the college community on the nature of LD's
- Sponsor a cookie hour for the entire campus
- Be part of the activities fair each fall semester
- Acquire a program house
- Help with returning student presentations as students approach graduation
