ADA & Reasonable Accommodations

All students with disabilities have certain rights under federal law. In order to access services and protections under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, individuals with disabilities must submit documentation that verifies the disability and establishes need for specific and evidence-based accommodation(s) because of a substantial impairment in one or more life functions.

Documentation should conform to the guidelines below:

  • qualifications of the evaluator;
  • recent evaluation;
  • appropriate clinical documentation of a disability, including functional limitations and recommendations for specific accommodations;
  • evidence establishing a rationale to support the need for specific accommodations.

Because the DEO needs to review documentation in order to provide appropriate accommodations, all students requesting any accommodations must submit their request with appropriate documentation through the DEO. Please allow up to six weeks from the time your completed request and required documentation is received by the DEO to receive your letter regarding confirmation. You are urged to send in your request for accommodation and the required documentation well in advance of the date you desire to use the accommodation.

Students requesting auxiliary services or accommodations should submit their request and required documentation to the Executive Director for the Center for Advancement of Learning, c/o DEO, Muskingum University Walter Hall, New Concord, Ohio 43762, 740-826-8280. Accommodations are provided at no charge.

Reasonable accommodations can include but are not limited to the following testing accommodations:

  • Extended time for testing
  • A distraction-reduced environment for testing
  • Exams administered by a reader or scribe
  • Enlarged print
  • Computer access
  • Coordination of course materials in alternate format
  • Assistance to obtain class notes http://calnotes.wal.muskingum.edu:7000/webUI/login.cgi

Individuals seeking additional reasonable accommodations for a disability are encouraged to self-identify to the University compliance officer (Kathy Moore, Human Resources Coordinator, 16 Montgomery Hall, 740-826-8114), stating the nature of the accommodations needed. Muskingum University assumes the responsibility for making available to all legally qualified students with disabilities reasonable accommodations and auxiliary aids or services required to facilitate unrestricted access to the learning environment and to enable them to demonstrate academic achievement. Such reasonable accommodations are made at no expense or are shared where necessary, and the accommodations vary in accordance with the disability.
