Muskies fall to Wittenberg in NCAA Division III Volleyball Championships

NEW CONCORD, OHIO, November 13, 2008 - The Muskingum College volleyball team fell to Wittenberg University in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Volleyball Championships on Thursday evening, 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-18). [boxscore] [photo gallery]

Muskingum ended its stellar season at 23-7 overall and were the eighth team in Muskie history to enter the NCAA Tournament. Head Coach Elizabeth Zicha, the sixth all-time winningest coach in NCAA Division III, enters next year with 599 career wins - just one shy of milestone victory 600.

The contest marked the final game for Muskie seniors Jessica McKenzie, Kara Hamilton, Allie Buckohr and Erin Neal.

In the match, McKenzie led the way with seven kills and she also recorded one block which raised her season total to 172 which ranks fifth all-time for blocks in a single season at Muskingum. McKenzie finished the year with a team-best .360 hitting percentage.

Hamilton who recorded five kills on the night, finished the campaign with a career-high 204 kills and 70 blocks. Meanwhile, junior Gretchen Van der Sluijs added four kills to finish her season with 206 spikes and 156 digs.

Junior Nicole Biblis led the Muskies in digs with 14, while Buckohr added recorded eight. The 14 digs for Biblis give her a total of 650 digs for the season, putting her fourth on the all-time list for digs in a single season at Muskingum. Additionally, Biblis has 1488 career digs, placing her third on the all-time digs in a career list for the Muskies. Buckohr finished the 2008 season with a total of 439 digs and 239 kills.

Leading the Muskies in assists was freshman Molly Scholl with 10, while freshman Lindsey Worthington added eight. Worthington finished the season with a team-high 462 assists, while Scholl finished with 208 assists.
