Coach Fox named OAC Coach of the Year; McKenzie named OAC Player of the Year and Youel First Team All-OAC
NEW CONCORD, OHIO, March 3, 2009 - Muskingum College head women's basketball coach Beth Fox was honored by her peers Tuesday when the Ohio Athletic Conference announced that Coach Fox was named the OAC Women's Basketball Coach of the Year. Senior post Jessica McKenzie was recognized as the Helen Ludwig Co-OAC Player of the Year and senior guard Tiffany Youel rounded out the Muskie honors with First Team All-OAC accolades.
Fox, who guided the Muskies to a 18-9 overall mark and 12-6 slate and third place finish in the OAC, becomes the first Muskingum coach to garner the Coach of the Year honor since Coach Donna Newberry brought home the distinction in 1996. Fox directed the team to its highest league finish since the 1996-97 campaign and took the squad to the OAC Tournament Final Four for the first time since the 2000-01 season. She coached both McKenzie and Youel to First Team All-OAC, which marked the first time that Muskingum has placed two players on the First Team squad since 1989 when Julia Hoag and Kathy Lee both received the recognition.
McKenzie, a three-time First Team All-OAC selection, shares the OAC Player of the Year honor with Danielle Sanna of Capital University. For the third straight year McKenzie led the OAC in field goal shooting percentage (.547) and for the second straight season she led the league in rebounds (11.2 rpg). McKenzie finished third in the conference in scoring (18.6 ppg). She ended the year with 15 double-doubles (points/rebounds) and ranked fifth all-time in scoring at Muskingum with 1,383 career points. McKenzie tied the school record for points in a game with her 37-point outburst against Manhattanville College. Elizabeth Schafer was the last Muskie to win the OAC Player of the Year in 1996.
Youel ranked second in the league in scoring (19.0 ppg), first in steals per game (2.78 spg), first in three-point field goals made (66), fourth in assist/turnover ratio and fourth in assists. She tied the school record for points in a game with her 37-point performance against Denison University. She ended her Muskie tenure ranked ninth all-time with 1,186 career points.
