Muskingum's run at OAC Tournament ends with loss against #17 Marietta
NEW CONCORD, OHIO, May 14, 2010 - The Muskingum University baseball team's run at the Ohio Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament ended with a 9-7 setback against 17th-ranked Marietta College on Friday. Muskingum, the four-seed, opened day two of the tournament with a 15-11 win against third-seed John Carroll University. The victory marked Muskingum's first OAC Tournament victory since 1992. [Video highlights of Muskingum's win against John Carroll]
The Muskies were led by the senior tandem of Wes Carder and Brock Whiteman. Carder tied a tournament record for hits in a game with his five-hit performance with four runs and three RBIs. Whiteman added eight RBIs with two three-run home runs and a two-run single. Junior Forrest Wright notched three hits and two RBIs, while junior Erik Spitzer, sophomore Colton Newell and freshman Alex Vacarro all logged two hits each. Newell also belted a home run and Vaccaro scored three runs.
The Muskies scored 13 runs through the first four innings to take control of the outing. Muskingum ended the outing with 19 hits.
Sophomore starter Isaac Free scattered 12 hits in seven innings of work to earn his fifth win of the campaign. He allowed eight runs (seven earned) with six strikeouts and one walk.
In the Muskies' second game of the day against Marietta, the Muskies dropped a hard-fought battle, 9-7. The loss eliminated Muskingum from the tournament and marked the final game for Carder, Whiteman and seniors Josh Cornwell, Ben Skelley and Jared Patterson.
Muskingum led 7-2 after two innings behind Spitzer's three-run home run in the first and RBI single in the second inning. Whiteman, Vaccaro and junior Tyler Hardcastle all added an RBI in the second too. Marietta scored one in the fourth and four in the fifth to tie the game. The Pioneers took the lead with a two-run eighth.
Pioneer pitcher Kyle Lindquist fired five innings of one-hit relief with five strikeouts to halt the Muskie offensive onslaught.
Muskie starter Michael Congrove tossed five innings with 14 hits and seven runs. Skelley suffered the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) in three innings of work.
Muskingum lost its opening game at the tournament against top-seed and third-ranked Heidelberg University Thursday, 29-5.
Muskingum fell victim to a 32-hit attack by Heidelberg in its first OAC Tournament appearance since 1994. The Student Princes built a 13-0 lead after five innings and used a 15-run sixth inning to coast to the victory.
Carder highlighted the Muskies' play with his school record setting 155th career run scored. Carder now ranks first all-time at Muskingum in runs. Newell belted his sixth home run of the season and Whiteman, Hardcastle and Spitzer all added an RBI for the Muskies.
Patterson was tagged with the loss after lasting 3.2 innings and allowing 11 hits and 12 runs (10 earned).
Following the championship game, Whiteman and Wright were named to the all-tournament squad.
