Major Areas of Study: SPANISH
The Spanish program at Muskingum University centers on the study of the Spanish language, the literary and artistic production of Spanish-speaking cultures, and increasingly, the practical applications of Spanish within the global economy.
Student Opportunities
Internships
Opportunities for Spanish students include:
- English Teaching Assistantship, Universidad de Castilla La Mancha UCLM, Spain. This paid, year-long assistantship involves teaching English to professors, administrative staff and students of UCLM. Each Lecturer will be assigned a faculty advisor that will be in charge of helping the Lecturer organize his/her classes and of offering any teaching advice.
- The Modern Language department assists students seeking paid or volunteer internships in Hispanic countries through various agencies and organizations.
Research
- Students may arrange independent research projects (1-3 credit hours) to be conducted in Spanish.
- Senior seminar research projects center on a specific area of Hispanic literature, culture, or international business. Research writing and methodology are emphasized. Results are presented in an oral expose and a written paper. Students are encouraged to produce a paper that can be presented at national conferences.

Senior Matt Mayforth will teach in Austria as Fulbright
recipient
Muskingum University senior Matt Mayforth will spend the
next academic year in Braunau am Inn, Austria, as a result of being awarded an
English Teaching Assistant scholarship through the 2012-2013 Fulbright U.S.
Student Program competition.
The Fulbright Program, established in 1946, is the largest American
international exchange program and is sponsored by the U.S. Department of
State. The prestigious Fulbright U.S. Student Program competition offers
opportunities for students and young professionals to teach in elementary and
secondary schools worldwide, and to undertake international graduate study and
advanced research. The Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Arts and Culture
is underwriting Mayforth’s Fulbright support.
As a student, Mayforth has studied abroad at Muskingum’s partner
universities in both Passau, Germany, and Toledo, Spain. Prior to enrolling at
Muskingum, he spent six weeks in Germany. On campus, Mayforth has been involved in the German Club and Phi Sigma Iota,
the international foreign language honor society. In addition, he has been a
resident of the university’s German House, and has been actively engaged with
both German- and Spanish-speaking students who have travelled to Muskingum from
abroad.
In addition to the Fulbright support, Mayforth also received a scholarship to
attend the Ohio Foreign Language Association conference held in Columbus earlier
this year.
Mayforth’s nomination for this scholarship was supported by his faculty
advisors, Assistant Professor of Spanish Dr. Beth Butler and Professor of German
Dr. Franz-Joseph Wehage.
- Spanish major Kirsten Battaglia (’13) spent the entire 2010-11 academic year studying at the Universidad Blas Pascal (UBP) in Argentina. She was enrolled in intensive Spanish language and culture courses, as well as electives of their choice.

studying in France and Mexico. She has been recognized for “Distinction in the
Major Capstone” for her Senior Seminar in Spanish, is a recipient of a
