Textbook Ordering and Information Policy

Muskingum University supports the efforts of the 2008 extension of the United States' Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA) "to ensure that students have access to affordable course materials by decreasing costs to students and enhancing transparency and disclosure with respect to the selection, purchase, sale and use of course materials." (H.R. 4137, section 112-a)

The Legislation
Section 112-d-1, the "Provision of ISBN College Textbook Information in Course Schedules," states that "to the maximum extent possible, each institution of higher education receiving Federal assistance shall disclose, on the institution's Internet course schedule and in a manner of the institution's choosing, the International Standard Book Number [ISBN] and retail price information of required and recommended college textbooks and supplemental materials for each course listed in the institution's course schedule used for preregistration and registration purposes ...."

Muskingum University Policy
"Faculty are expected to submit book information to the Muskingum University bookstore 14 days before the registration period commences. The bookstore will either list the books as information only, or as materials that can be purchased from the bookstore, depending on the stated wishes of the faculty.

...(F)or graduate and the Muskingum Adult Program [MAP] classes, the Office of Graduate and Continuing Studies will post, on their website, a link to the bookstore's website. As soon as faculty teaching in graduate courses and the Muskingum Adult Program have decided on books for their courses, Graduate and Continuing Studies will submit this information." (Faculty Approval, April 26, 2011). Link in new window to full document.

Faculty are further advised to notify the bookstore of situations in which no textbook is required.

From the Muskingum University Bookstore website, students are able to search for and obtain textbook information by semester, department, course, and individual section. The textbook information also signals to students if the books are required, recommended, or optional. If desired, students may purchase their textbooks directly from the bookstore's website, or they may use the information to shop for books from a supplier of their choice.
