* Federal Student Loan Repayment *

Because of legislation passed by Congress, the student loan payment pause is ending. Interest resumes on Sept. 1, and payments are due in October. Borrowers can lower their payments, even to $0, by enrolling in the new SAVE Plan. Learn how the Administration is supporting borrowers. Preparing for loan repayment is the first step. Take a look at this helpful guide "6 ways to Prepare for Student Loan Repayment to Begin Again." from the Department of Education to help you get ready for repayment.

The FAFSA form for 2024-2025 is undergoing some major changes!

For the past several years, the FAFSA has opened in October. This year, with all the changes, the FAFSA opening has been delayed until December. The FAFSA Simplification Act will expand the Federal Pell Grant by linking eligibility to family size and federal poverty level. Effective with the 2024-2025 year, the parent contributor criteria have changed for students with divorced or separated parents not living together.

The student must complete the FAFSA with the parent who provided the greater portion of the student’s financial support in the 12 months prior to filing the FAFSA -even if the student does not live with that parent. If neither parent provided support in that 12-month period, include information for the parent who provided the greater portion of support during the most recent year the student received financial support.  If both parents claim an equal amount of support, the parent with the greater amount of income or assets is the contributor.

While you wait for the FAFSA to open, you can go to https://studentaid.gov/announcements-events/fafsa-support to

  • use the Federal Student Aid Estimator
  • create studentaid.gov accounts for yourself and your contributor(s)
  • follow federal student aid social media to receive an alert when the new FAFSA is ready
