Department Events
The department finished the academic year with a reception for graduating seniors following senior seminar presentations on April 27.
| MY WORDS. Professor Alan Chaffee reads an original poem to celebrate the groundbreaking for the new music building on Muskingum's campus. Dr. Chaffee has been a member of the Muskingum faculty since 1970. |
LET THEM EAT CAKE. Muskingum University has one of the oldest chapters of Sigma Tau Delta in the country. And we eat well. |
| GUARDS OF THE BARD. The newest members of Sigma Tau Delta hold up their certificates proudly, while seniors wear their honor cords. |
READY TO PRESENT. Students in Dr. Chaffee's English 495 Seminar class get a brief pep talk before giving their presentations. Steve Dade, Ashley Anderson, Beth Hurst, Liz Strauss, and Levi Shaw did intense research on the play Hamlet for their projects. |
| "I'M SO HAPPY!" Elizabeth Strauss shows off her honor cord, while Dr. Chaffee calls the next senior up to receive the honor. |
BEATNIK WOLF. The English honorary's mascot came in costume to the Edgar Allen Poe movie night. The evening's theme was the Masque of the Red Death. |
| "LOOK WHAT I HAVE!" Senior journalism major Sarah Dwyer holds an award she received for her photograph illustrating the damage done by Hurricane Ike. |
RESCUE ME! Helen of Troy waits to give her talk in Dr. Edsall's mythology class. Karen Johnson (aka Helen of Troy) was this year's winner of the Academy of American Poets prize. |
| MY WE'RE ACTIVE!" Dr. Richard Williamson looks over the Sigma Tau Delta set up for the Activities Fair. The English Department needed four tables--Sigma Tau Delta, the English honorary; First Circle, the university's creative magazine; Black and Magenta, the university's weekly newspaper; The Muscoljuan, the university's yearbook. The university's Creative Writing Club also had a table. |
"AND I COOK TOO!" Dr. Jane Varley demonstrates she's as creative in the kitchen as she is on paper. She boiled the pasta for dinner at Dr. Edsall's house--and did not burn a thing! |
| THAT WAS SOME FALL! Icarus (aka Tom Williams) shows his scorched wings. He holds a paddle to illustrate a second version of the Icarus myth. Students in Classical Mythology gave their end-of-the-year reports on the subjects they researched. |
THE FEAST IS READY. After seminar reports, the department hosted a reception for seniors. A fine time ensued. |
