Muskingum University Athletic Department honors 22 student-athletes
NEW CONCORD, OHIO, April 26, 2012 - The Muskingum University Athletic Department has announced that a total of 22 student-athletes were recognized for their achievements both in the classroom and on the field.
Freshman softball first baseman Jaclynn Hess (Streetsboro) and basketball guard Logan Kimble (New Philadelphia) were presented with the William F. Lange Outstanding Freshmen Awards.
Hess leads the team with a .404 batting average, which also ranks sixth in the Ohio Athletic Conference. She carries a team-best .442 on-base percentage and has 36 hits, 15 runs scored, nine RBIs and one home run. Hess has notched 10 multiple hit games this season.
Kimble played in every game and was third on the team in scoring (7.2 ppg). He averaged 24.4 minutes per contest and 3.1 rebounds per game. Kimble logged a team-best .745 free throw shooting percentage and registered 19 steals.
Junior women’s soccer goalkeeper Sara Poling (Geneva) and sophomore football running back Alvin Taylor (Steubenville) were honored with the Ann White and Roy "Red" Turner Strive for Excellence Awards. Poling was named Second Team All-OAC for women’s soccer after leading the conference in saves (150) and saves per game (7.9). She ranked sixth in the OAC in shutouts with three and ninth in shutouts per game (0.16). Poling started every game between the pipes and logged 1,554 minutes. On the tennis court, Poling has added depth to the Muskie squad and has seen action in doubles play. Taylor owns the second fastest time in school history in the 400-meter dash (48.87) and ranks 31st in NCAA Division III. He helps anchor the Muskingum 4x100 and 4x400 relay squads that rank among the best in the Ohio Athletic Conference. On the gridiron, Taylor played in seven games as running back and on special teams.
Senior track & field athlete Jana Wyatt (West Salem/Northwestern) was recognized as the Barbara Steiner Outstanding Senior Female Athlete, while senior football linebacker Alex Thomas (Canton/Glen Oak) was acknowledged as the William G. Moore Outstanding Senior Male Athlete.
Wyatt is the school record holder in both the indoor and outdoor pole vault. She set the school record during the indoor season with a mark of 11-5.7 and set the record with a mark of 11-9 during the outdoor campaign. Wyatt has scored in six of the seven Ohio Athletic Conference Championships meets and currently ranks first in the OAC and 19th in the nation in the pole vault.
Thomas, who was honored with D3Football.com Third Team All-American accolades, was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Gene Slaughter Most Outstanding Linebacker. He led the league with 116 tackles, which ranked 13th in Division III. Additionally, he ranked 17th in Division III with 66 solo stops. Thomas also added nine tackles for loss, four sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and one interception. Furthermore, he was named First Team All-Ohio and First Team All-North Region. Additionally, Thomas was named to the D3football.com National Team of Week and was honored with OAC Defensive Player of the Week accolades.
Senior volleyball setter Molly Scholl (Cambridge/John Glenn) and senior baseball pitcher Todd Spadaro (Grove City) were honored with the Ohio Athletic Conference Clyde Lamb Award. Criteria for the award include at least two years participation in an OAC-sponsored sport, senior status, a minimum grade point average of 3.00 and sportsmanlike conduct in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete and his or her institution.
Scholl, a biology major, ended her Muskie tenure ranked sixth all-time in career assists with 1,427. She also recorded a career 806 digs. She is a three-time Academic All-OAC honoree and was a member of the 2008 Muskingum team that advanced to the NCAA Division III National Tournament. In the classroom, Scholl is a Muskingum University John Glenn Scholarship recipient, a Hugh Kuhn Biology Award honoree (Outstanding Senior Biology Student), a member of the Beta Beta Beta (National Biology Honorary), a member of the Phi Kappa Phi National Academic Honorary, a member of the Lambda Sigma National Sophomore Academic Honorary and has been a Dean’s List honoree for seven semesters. In the community, Scholl is President of Omicron Delta Kappa (Junior/Senior Leadership Honorary) and President of the Muskingum local sorority FAD. Additionally, Scholl was the recipient of the Muskingum Christian Athlete Award, a member of the Muskingum Student Judicial Board, a member of the Muskingum Senior Legacy Program, a Teaching Assistant for anatomy and physiology II and cell physiology and a Greek Council member.
Spadaro, an intervention specialist major, anchors the Muskie pitching staff this season with a 2.72 ERA and carries a 4-2 record with one save. He is holding hitters to a .249 batting average and had recorded 31 strikeouts, with three complete games. Spadaro ranks fourth all-time for appearances in a single season with 18 and ranks eighth in fewest walks allowed in a single season with seven, both set in 2011. In the classroom, Spadaro is a member of the Kappa Delta Pi Education Honorary, a member of Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honorary and has been recognized on the Dean’s List multiple times. In the community, Spadaro has served as a Muskingum baseball youth clinic coach and coached summer league baseball in Grove City.
Senior women’s cross country runner Kristine Harstine (Warsaw/River View), senior women’s track & field athlete Leigh Ann Amspaugh (Zanesville), senior softball catcher Elyse Roddy (Sidney), senior women’s basketball forward Rachel Buirley (Mount Vernon), senior track athlete Corey Byers (Trotwood/Madison), senior men’s basketball guard George Williams (Youngstown/Ursuline), senior men’s soccer defender Jacob Morris (Groveport), senior men’s soccer defender Dan Cestoni (Louisville), senior men’s tennis player Ryan Reichley (Dresden/Tri-Valley), senior men’s tennis player Derek Reichley (Dresden/Tri-Valley), senior football defensive lineman Jacob Moore (Columbus/Saint Francis DeSales), senior baseball pitcher Joe Jenkins (Lancaster), senior baseball pitcher Josh Eckard (Newark) and senior baseball infielder J.P. Finnicum (Gallipolis/Gallia Academy) were all honored with the Greg Riggar Dedication to Sport Award. The award is bestowed upon senior student-athletes at Muskingum who show excellence in associated areas of dedication to sport, leadership, and practice habits. The athlete must have participated for all four years of his/her collegiate career, be held in high esteem by his/her fellow teammates and also exhibit the qualities of loyalty and discipline.
