Mariah James, '16
Senior Mariah James has made the most of her time as a Muskingum student. The Akron, Ohio native is Vice President of the concert choir, chaplain of her sorority, and was previously a Muskingum University cheerleader and a member of the Marching Band. In addition, Mariah has studied abroad in three different locales!
Mariah took “Sociology of India” with Professor David Tabachnick, leaving the United States for the first time to visit the country. Of her first experience outside the U.S., Mariah says, “It was a fantastic class that truly opened my eyes to all the diversity study abroad has to offer. It was very shocking to experience such a drastic difference in culture but none the less one of the most meaningful experiences in my life.”
Mariah later spent six months studying in Perugia, Italy at the Umbra Institute. While studying there, she had the opportunity to engage in service learning, teaching English at Italian middle and high schools, and helping to plant a vegetable garden in an underprivileged community. “It was a life changing experience and easily the best 6 months of my entire life,” she enthuses about her experience.
Finally, Mariah participated in a summer study abroad program in Lanzhou, China, where Muskingum University and several professors have a long-standing relationship.
Mariah is grateful for her experience as a Muskie. In addition to growing intellectually and emotionally as a person, she has been supported by the “caring and professional staff as well as student body.”
