Mission Statement

The public affairs major is dedicated to informing students of knowledge of the world in the areas of politics, business, and administration (both public and private).  Students are exposed to major perspectives in multiple disciplines and are prepared to locate and analyze written, visual and material evidence, understanding and appreciating continuities, change and even contradictions in the field of public affairs.  The major places a high value on student/faculty collaborative learning both in and out of the classroom and seeks to provide students multiple opportunities to apply theory to practice.

The missions of Muskingum University and the public affairs major are deliberately similar.  The public affairs major seeks to offer a high quality academic program that intellectually develops students by fostering critical thinking and positive action so that they may lead vocationally productive, personally satisfying, and socially responsible lives.  The major is designed to provide students with skills that may be applied to specific professions of public affairs such as teaching social studies, public policy positions in government and nonprofit agencies, positions with private corporations, public relations work, and preparation for further studies in either graduate or law school.  Recognizing that some students who major in public affairs may choose careers outside the field of study, the major is designed around seven skill areas to ensure that all students gain strong skills in reading, writing, problem solving, critical thinking, and critical analysis that may be applied to virtually any field.

For this reason we embrace the liberal arts tradition of our discipline and are ultimately dedicated to making our students lifetime learners who are prepared to enter professions that expect training in public affairs but are trained broadly enough that they can enter fields beyond the discipline.
