Every month for the past six years, the Ohio Athletic Conference has been naming an OAC Scholar-Athlete of the Month; the recipient of the award for the month of September is senior soccer player Cheryl Davies.

"I feel honored that I am the only athlete for the month of September out of all the OAC schools to get this recognition," Davies said.

In order to receive the honor, the athlete must be a junior or senior, be an in-season athlete, display sportsmanlike conduct, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0. This monthly award draws possible candidates from the 10 OAC schools Baldwin-Wallace College, Capital University, Heidelberg College, John Carroll University, Marietta College, Mount Union College, Muskingum College, Ohio Northern University, Otterbein College, and Wilmington College, meaning each month there are several qualified athletes.

Cheryl Davies is a midfielder who, in her senior year, threatens to break several records for the Lady Muskies. She is second all-time leader in career goals with 17, third all-time leader in career point with 46, and fifth all-time leader with career assists at 12.

Womenıs soccer Head Coach, Mary Beth Caudill, said in a press release, "Cheryl is the epitome of the scholar student-athlete. The leadership she displays on the field and in school is a model for all student-athletes to follow."

Daviesı goals for the remainder of the season are numerous. Number one on her list is simple.    "My goal for the season is, of course, to win games!" Cheryl commented. But her love of the team does not end with simply winning. "I hope that as a senior I can leave something special with each of the younger players that will help them in the future."

Coach Caudill added, "The dedication and commitment that she demonstrates is something that her fellow teammates admire."

Davies carries a 3.94 cumulative GPA, while staying busy with not only soccer, but a handful of other activities and organizations. Davies is a member of the Chi Alpha Nu sorority, where she serves as the Alumnae Correspondent. She is also Greek Council treasurer, Publicity chair for Centerboard, and a member of the ODK honorary.

When asked how she does it all and keeps such a stellar GPA, Davies answered, "I try to keep track of all of my assignments and tests, as well as my schedule for the day. This helps me to know when I have time that I should be spending getting work done."

Davies commended the Muskingum College athletic program for its mandatory study tables, saying that they are a great way to stay focused. She also suggests that it is a good idea for all student-athletes to try to get ahead in their work as much as they can, especially when a busy athletic week looms.

Davies is a Business and Public Accounting major. After graduation she hopes to take the CPA exam and one day receive her Masterıs degree in Business Administration.

"It would be great to find a business job in a field somehow related to sports," offered Davies.    Her love for soccer will not end with her playing time at Muskingum. She has always hoped to play in a womenıs semi-pro league or even adult leagues.

"Soccer has been such a huge part of my life, and I am not ready to completely give it up yet," said Davies.

Cheryl can be seen playing with the Lady Muskies in their next home game, Sept. 24 at 5:00 p.m. against Wittenberg.
